War Baby is a heavy power trio from Vancouver, Canada. The group is comprised of two Albertans, songwriting kindred spirits Brock Allen (vocals, bass), Jon Redditt (vocals, guitar) and Australian born drum savant Kirby Fisher (drums, vocals). The group’s RIYL (which runs the gamut of alternative, proto-punk and noise rock greats) is both relevant but also limited as they always stir their influences professionally.
With over 200 live performances under their belts- including opening slots for the likes of Eagles of Death Metal, Dune Rats, Death, Pink Mountaintops, White Lung, SNFU, DZ Deathrays and Royal Blood - War Baby are a seasoned Pacific Northwest act despite their youthful hearts. To date, War Baby has released two EPs and two LPs. Three of their recordings were tracked, mixed and co-produced with Jordan Koop (whose vast recording credits include Wolf Parade, The Courtneys, Orville Peck and Dead Soft, among countless others) at Noise Floor Recording Studio.
In live performances that can range from supremely controlled to all out frenzied in one show, War Baby have been known to impress folks of all walks. From the aging, jaded punk with crossed arms, to the 16 year old kid who snuck into the bar just to watch them play, the act has proven a timeless quality to their audiences. The band seasons their sometimes sardonic ferocity with a sprinkle of cheekiness and sense of humor which never shine through so clearly as when they perform live. In short, if you are capable of having fun, it will be had at a War Baby show.
War Baby began as a 2 piece act after the Australian born Fisher found himself stranded in Vancouver. A bond was formed between Redditt and Fisher over bizarre t shirts while working together picking vintage clothing from a dusty rag-house. Sneaking into (and being kicked out of) half a dozen jam spaces, the duo trudged through the trenches in one of the world’s most expensive cities.
After playing countless local shows together, the group invited old friend Brock Allen to join on bass and contribute songs, completing the line-up. Regional touring followed, sometimes covering all of Canada, and strangely once even including dates in China. The act was awarded 1st place in CiTR’s 30th prestigious anniversary Shindig! contest, in which Vancouver’s best and brightest young hopefuls duke it out (previous winners of Shindig! have included The Pack AD, Japandroids and 3 Inches of Blood). War Baby opted to return their prize of free recording time with the gift of a free EP release entitled Coma Kid.
Like the oft forgotten micro-generation that they are named for, the outfit creates beauty out of ugliness, clarity out of confusion, creation out of defamiliarization. War Baby makes “strange” a good thing.
Recently, immediate plans for touring of the USA have been engaged. War Baby’s brand new record You are not here is to be delivered Fall 2019.
